Art
Intent:
At Orchard Primary Academy we aim to ensure that we provide a high-quality, practical Art education which engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, take risks, become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens, available to invent and create their own works of art. Through our teaching, we expect pupils to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art. They should also know how art is reflected in and has shaped our history, contributed to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
The Art Curriculum at Orchard enables pupils to build up a body of key foundation knowledge and concepts, enabling them to recognise, understand and adapt their own power of human creativity as well as using creativity within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.
Please find below a document that outlines the coverage of Art teaching.
Implementation:
Throughout the teaching of Art, we aim to ensure that all pupils:
- produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art techniques.
- critique, evaluate and analyse their ideas and creative works using the language of art.
- know about great artists and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms and the impact this had and continues to have on the world around them.
- develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
- build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to create art work for a range of purposes and that can be appreciated by a wide audience.
Impact:
Throughout their time at Orchard Primary Academy children will cover the following areas of Art:
- Drawing, painting and Collage
- sculpture and 3D form
- Critiquing existing works of art
- Developing, planning, exploring and communicating ideas
- Evaluating work
- Working with a wide range of art tools and media
During each topic, pupils will demonstrate prior skills and knowledge, gathering new skills, techniques and subject knowledge to build upon these pre-existing ideas. Children will be encouraged to reflect on the skills and knowledge learnt throughout the topic and be taught to appreciate the works of other artists in a continuous manner. Sketch books will be used for gathering ideas, testing new skills, creating pallets and making relevant notes to enable children to absorb and reflect continuously, supporting long term knowledge development.
