Seasonal Homework Activity

Talking project: Happy new year! We welcome in the New Year for 2025 this holiday. Later this month the children will also be celebrating the Lunar New Year on January 29th. Both events are marked by thinking about new goals and the good things to come. At home, we would like you to discuss the topic ‘out with the old and in with the new’.

Think about answering the following questions:

What have we been grateful for this year?

What have we been proud of this year?

What would we like to achieve over the next year?

Is there anything we would like to change?

Be creative with how you wish to present this. It could be a poster, or a piece of writing, or an interview of different people’s responses in your home or wider family.

Some ideas are pictured below:

Please return your creations to school on Tuesday 7th January so that we can display them, they may also be included in our personal development assemblies this half term.

Have a great day, see you all tomorrow and we look forward to hearing about your fun in the snow!😊

Please make sure all items are clearly labelled with the children's names.

Reading Books

We need to bring our reading books into school every day and take it home with us every night. We will read to an adult at least twice a week in school and should try to read to ourselves; to our grown ups or to our siblings at least three times a week at home. You should log your reading on Boom Reader so your teacher can see your reading and reward you for it.

Key Dates

This half term we will be learning ....

English

In English, we will be reading 'The Gunpowder Plot' by Rob Lloyd Jones.

'On November 4th 1606, a traitor was caught beneath the Houses of Parliament with a plot to kill the king. '

Guided Reading

As part of our English curriculum, we will practise Guided Reading or Phonics every day.  This half term we will be reading the book 'The Bakers Boy And The Great Fire Of London ' by Tom and Tony Bradman.

'When Will Farriner wakes to the sound of crackling flames and the smell of smoke, he knows something is terribly wrong! As his family escape the flames engulfing their bakery, Will realises he must stop the fire from spreading. But what can be done before all of London goes up in smoke?'

 Phonics

We use a teaching programme called Read Write Inc. (RWI) to teach our children to read and spell.  Our friend Fred will be helping us to learn lots of new sounds. He is a frog who can only speak in sounds, and we call this Fred Talk.  Fred helps the children blend sounds to read each word. Children also learn to read red words on sight. Red words are words that cannot be segmented or blended.

Maths

In Maths we will be focusing on Shape and Money.

We will practise identifying and recognising 2D and 3D shapes and practice counting money in pounds and pence.

We will also continue to practise counting in steps of 2, 5, and 10.

Our Science topic this half term is 'Living things and their habitats'.
