Year 2 Discovery Time
On Friday afternoons in Year 2, children take part in exciting STEM enrichment sessions called Discovery Time. This dedicated session encourages pupils to explore, investigate and solve problems through hands-on learning experiences linked to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
During Discovery Time, children have to work collaboratively to design, build, test and improve their ideas. Activities we have taken part in include constructing and testing our own hot air balloons, creating working holograms, investigating materials and conducting simple experiments and exploring simple machines. These activities can be linked to current and previous learning but are also driven by children's interests and natural curiosity.
Through these engaging experiences, pupils are developing important skills such as creativity, resilience, teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving. We have been particularly impressed at the problem-solving and teamworking skills the children have demonstrated during some of these sessions. They are encouraged to think critically and independently to solve problems they may come across, make predictions on what might happen, test their ideas and learn from their mistakes in a safe environment, supported by the Year 2 staff.
Take a look below at some of the fantastic projects we have worked on in these sessions.
